First batch of bread!
I say batch, I mean loaf. But by gum, it’s definitely bread! See below for photographs, etc.
I used Delia Smith’s Quick Brown Loaf (well, it’s called something like that) from Delia’s Complete Cookery Course. It’s not a brick, it didn’t collapse, it doesn’t taste horrendously of yeast or grit, and it goes quite well with a bit of ham.
All said, I would figure that a success. It could maybe do with being a bit lighter (it’s not something you’d eat in large quantities) but that’s just a feature of the flour used. Next time I may go 50/50 with wholemeal and white flour, to make something a bit less dense.
It may also be slightly bland, but not offensively so. (I have made rolls in the past where I’ve forgotten to add salt. It’s really strange to be eating something that smells so good, but has apparently no taste whatsoever. And no matter how salty the topping, it never really balances out.) My only immediate problem is that we don’t have a bread bin. The shops either sell stainless steel, which I don’t want, or wooden ones that have all the professionalism of second year craft and design students.
The remainder of the loaf is happily ensconced in a Le Creuset casserole dish. Where else?

I have one of these - http://www.godfreys-online.co.uk/pageview.php?page=show_product&ecommerce_stockcode=333460 - that I’d be happy to pass on :)
Naw, I’m definitely looking for a wooden box, but one that is crafted, not the stuff you see in John Lewis or whatever, which always seems to be made out of strips of reject pine finish from Changing Rooms. Really flimsy and apparently close to breaking in the shop.
